Man acquitted of shooting Paterson teen
On December 10, 2011, a jury acquitted Miguel Chica, 28, of murder following a lengthy trial. The case garnered attention as a result of the testimony of Joel Perales, who claimed to have witnessed Chica shoot and kill the young man.
Perales’ testimony wilted under intense cross examination by Hackensack defense attorney Kevin G. Roe, who methodically dissected Perales’ account, drawing clear inconsistencies between his story and the medical examiner’s report. Mr. Roe also questioned Perales’ own involvement in the man’s death and accused him of lying to protect himself.
"The jury was able to evaluate the credibility of the lone witness on whose testimony the state's case was based, who was shown to have repeatedly lied to investigators and the jury itself," Roe said.
