A Hackensack man who pleaded guilty to death by auto in an early
morning accident that killed a pedestrian was sentenced Friday to three
years' probation and 270 days of community service.
Bernardino Parisi could have been given jail time, but was spared a
stiffer sentence in a plea deal with the Passaic County Prosecutor's
Office, said Kevin G. Roe, his attorney.
Authorities said Parisi was driving recklessly when his vehicle
struck a public telephone, a part of which hit and fatally injured
pedestrian Shirley Mae Walker of Paterson. The incident occurred shortly
after midnight June 30, 1993, near Hamilton and Grand avenues in
Paterson.
Roe said Parisi and two friends were in the car and talking with an
unidentified woman on a Paterson street when she pulled the keys from
the car and started running. When Parisi ran after her, a group of men
on the street began throwing things at him, Roe said. Parisi told
authorities that he retreated to his car and tried to flee, but lost
control of the vehicle.
Authorities would not discuss the circumstances of the encounter
with the woman.
Walker, 36, who had been returning home from a baby-sitting job,
suffered fatal head injuries, Passaic County Assistant Prosecutor
Martin R. Kayne said.
